Tips from Olle Garden Bed: A Clever Way To Plant Roses

Have you ever seen a flower that just makes you breathless and looks good? Do you want to keep it forever in some way? Sure, the flowers will always dry, but this option won't make them look like you first stared at them. The following content also has some reference value for raised garden beds.

The dried flowers themselves are very beautiful, and they are the best thing for making projects or wedding confetti, but sometimes you just want to focus on flowers.

It all started a few years ago. On our anniversary, my gorgeous boyfriend gave me a pile of beautiful roses. At that time, I preferred rings, but it turned out that I didn't need to wait too long (it was better to be late than not - am I the right lady?!).

Anyway, although their colors and sizes are the same, one of them stands out from other flowers - I can't express what it is in words, but when I see a special flower, I know a special flower.

In all respects, it is a perfect rose, from the circumference of the head to the shape of the petals. And the smell -- oh, my God, it's just the most incredible smell that floats into my nose.

Such sweet and floral fragrance is like a very expensive perfume, but it adds the element of freshness. I think the symmetry of the overall appearance may also help in this regard, because the other flowers in the bouquet are also very fragrant.

I began to wonder if it was possible to plant a new bush with this rose. Then I can plant the same good roses and enjoy them more.

I read online and in the community and found that planting roses in this way is not only feasible, but actually very simple.

Since then, I have used this cutting to plant a healthy rose bush, which has brought me indescribable happiness. However, different people have different degrees of success, so you can do something to maximize your chances of achieving good results, as well as things to avoid.

preparation

In the process of flower growth, the first thing you need to do is to choose where you want the cuttings to come from. I have thought of a specific flower, so this part is easy for me.

I decided to also remove the cuttings from the other roses in this bunch, so that I would not rely only on the first rose I tried to work perfectly.

I have read that once you receive flowers, the earlier you take away your cuttings, the better, because they need to be in the best possible condition to remain useful. This means that there is no time to waste and I need to act quickly.

Fortunately, when I first saw a flower, the first idea in my mind was to try to copy it, so I didn't wait a few days, and then decided to cut it.

The stems of the bouquet were also put in a small pot of water, so they never had a chance to kill them. The method I use means that I can still appreciate the flowers as they are, because I don't need the whole stem of each flower.

In fact, the vases I have are very short, so they actually trim the stems perfectly for a better fit. It's great when things seem to be better than expected - it's almost like I planned the whole thing!

According to many plant experts, you should try to plant new roots during the growing season (i.e. spring). This means that you can prevent them from being killed in cold winter weather, and they do not have to endure very hot, dry conditions, which may also be harmful.

It happened that my anniversary sunset was in April, so I actually received roses at the ideal time for tailoring. I first carefully evaluated my garden so that I could figure out where I wanted to plant them.

I found a perfect position near some trees at the end of the garden - they can still get light, but they are not directly in the path of the sun.

Unlike many other flowers, roses do not need sufficient sunlight at any available time and perform best in shaded areas. I dug a hole before removing the cuttings.

Most experts agree that each hole should be at least 4 inches deep and 6 inches wide, so I considered these dimensions and left enough space between each hole.

process

So, I know what flowers I want to use. The next step is to carefully remove the cuttings from each stem.

I make sure I am very careful about this, because I am very worried about destroying my precious roses (especially my favorite roses!), Or make them look worse than before.

This meant that I had to research before taking the risk, but it didn't take long for me to feel ready. When making an actual cut, you need to run the stem underwater, and then put each cut into a bowl of water immediately.

This is to keep them moist and prevent them from drying out. Water is very important for cuttings because it contains the nutrients they need to survive.

This is the same reason you put pre cut flowers in water, because they can no longer naturally draw water from the ground. Each cut shall be made at an angle of 45 degrees and the length of the cut shall be between 6 and 8 inches.

This length ensures that each cut will have 4 nodes, which are the part of the stem where the leaves grow.

Once you remove so much from the stem, the flowers you leave behind will be very short, but you can easily solve this problem by choosing a vase that is reasonably short.

I am still in their water bowl, take them to the garden, and plant them separately in the soil. Then I covered them with more soil to fill the holes I created, leaving about half of each stem sticking out of the ground.

I've read that it's a good idea to cover them to increase the humidity, but if you live in a damp place, this step is unnecessary. Since I'm in Florida, it seems safe not to bother to cover my small stems.

In addition, most of the suggestions are things like an un turned soda bottle, and I'm not keen on introducing plastic into my garden.

In my initial experience, the most surprising thing I found was that I didn't need to go out and buy professional equipment to succeed.

Of course, I have some things wandering from my previous gardening experiments, but nothing fancy. The most important part of planting cuttings is to arm yourself with as much knowledge as possible in advance, because the equipment you use can only do so much.

find

As I mentioned earlier, spring is a good time to cultivate cuttings, which is the way I started.

However, some experts suggest taking them in the autumn, because that is the latest flowering period, and you only have a bare canvas to work on.

This method requires you to breed cuttings inside in winter, because they will not survive outdoors in the first few months at that time.

Since I started my first cut in the spring, I also want to try the autumn method, so that I can compare the results of each method.

When I form an idea in my mind, I have been looking for ways to improve it - I think this is my inner scientist, eager to try anything I can. Therefore, when autumn came, during my biennial visit to her home, I collected some cuttings from my mother's rose bushes (with her permission!).

I took them home and put them in a 6-inch pot. I used Espoma potting mixture, which is my favorite indoor plant organic soil mixture, but you can use anything suitable for this purpose.

I planted them, so about half of the cutting is under the soil, and the other half is poked out from the top, because this is the recommended method. As long as some stems are still visible, it should be OK.

I thought that plants bred indoors would be stronger when they were ready to be planted, but I was surprised to find that plants that were outdoors from the beginning would settle down faster. This means that they start to take off and develop earlier than indoor ones.

I think this is related to the fact that they have a longer time to adapt to being underground, and they do not need to transplant in the future. Of course, your own experience may be different, so it mainly comes down to what you think is easier.

The most important factor about whether your cuttings will succeed is probably the warmth of the soil.

Although roses are one of the more hardy plants and therefore more likely to survive in adverse conditions, they can only thrive if the soil temperature is high enough.

I suspect that even after winter, when I came outside to plant the second batch of plants, the ground was still not sufficiently warm.

This is in sharp contrast to the first batch, which I planted directly outside in warm weather. At that time, the average soil temperature was already very high.

Why plant flowers from cuttings?

I started my journey of cuttings growth because I wanted to reproduce the specific roses I received in the bouquet.

This is a good way to ensure that you can have more and more flowers you like - if you do it right and take care of your rose bushes.

You can enjoy them forever! However, there are many other reasons why planting your own flowers from cuttings is a good thing.

pleasure

If you have children, they will be happy to help you complete this project for your family garden. This is a great activity for children of all ages and genders, and will teach them how to grow their own plants.

When I asked them to put some cuttings in the small flowerpot on the window sill, my 5-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter were fascinated (this was the second time I went, for those in my beginning).

I explained this task. After asking countless questions about why we do this and how it works (I'm really not the best person to deal with these things, so I told them to talk to their science teacher!), They are really in trouble.

They like to put the cuttings carefully in the pot, cover them with soil, and wait to see what happens. My children watched eagerly, and everyone hoped that their plants would become the first plants to take root.

As you can see, you can even turn it into a competition, which will provide your children with a project that can be carried out in a period of time. Even now, they know which bushes they planted.

However, please note that they will start asking you what flowers they can use, just like me - your garden or kitchen space has run out before you know it!

Now, I believe you will never have too many flowers, but even though I know what constitutes a ridiculous garden with weeds when I see a ridiculous garden with weeds.

If you run out of space in the garden from all the cuttings, you can always sell some of the extra bushes you created. This will mean that you can turn your hobby into a small business, and you may get some extra pocket money to spend on gardening equipment.

Or, you can give the bushes to your friends and family to commemorate special occasions such as birthdays. Starting from roses, we have now expanded to grow lavender and hydrangea from cuttings.

In addition to oregano, sage and other herbs, the taste of dinner is more delicious than the herbs in our own garden.

Price

You have now realized that cutting from a pre-existing factory does not cost anything - just make sure you first get permission from the factory owner. This means you don't have to spend money on seeds or even established plants.

Although these things are not necessarily expensive (you can buy a bag of rose seeds for a few dollars from your local garden shop). If your first attempt is unsuccessful and you need to buy more seeds, they will soon add up.

In addition, it is very satisfying to complete such a beautiful result without spending a penny. It's almost like a life jacket - you're just using the forces of nature and using them to work for you.

You can turn a dull, lifeless garden into a vibrant garden, even if you don't have any budget. All you need is a little patience and some basic gardening knowledge.

Of course, if you don't have rose bushes to pick and cut, and you don't know anyone who has roses, you still need to buy some roses yourself.

However, this will give you some extra rewards for lovely flowers and let you plant more. So, although it seems a waste of money to spend $5 on a pile of roses, you will find that it is not true.

convenient

It is not only cheaper to plant rose bushes with cuttings, but also easier than trying to plant them with seeds. This is because seeds take longer to reproduce, and many seeds will not even be taken away.

Cutting is a more stable choice because you have a healthy foundation from which buds can grow.

The best part is that you can save trouble and have to go through the process of obtaining seeds, planting them, waiting for them to germinate, and then watching them grow. On the contrary, you can simply buy some stems, put them in water, and watch them grow immediately!

You can expect your cutting to take root in just a few months, and then it should mature steadily in a year or two.

raised garden bed

On the other hand, it takes at least 3 years to plant the same shrub from the seeds to really start producing the right flowers.

Similarly, some seeds may take several years to germinate, while many seeds will not even do so.

Compared with a single batch of seeds, you are more likely to achieve your goals through one cut, and when you make all your efforts without any performance, it may be frustrating.

Are there any disadvantages in planting cuttings?

The only disadvantage of growing your own cuttings is that you don't always get what you want. If you are lucky enough to get a rose from the same plant, you can ensure that you can get a perfect flower every time.

But you can't use your cuttings to guarantee this. You will usually bloom two or three at each cut.

You need to wait until all these flowers are fully open before deciding whether you like them or not. However, you are still less likely to get an appearance than a seed.

This is what happened when I tried the second time. My first one (from the outstanding rose in my bouquet) happened to be very lovely, just as I hoped. However, the next batch of cuttings did not fully realize my vision for them.

Don't get me wrong - they're still good, but they don't match the original bushes in my mother's garden, and I took them from there. Maybe that's because I have a certain degree of nostalgia, which you can never copy.
